Supporting Teen Parents In Foster Care

Youth in foster care who are pregnant or parenting often face barriers to maternal care, critical supplies, financial assistance, and education. The Embracing Little Miracles campaign seeks to bridge these gaps in services and keep teen parents and their babies healthy and safe.

The Relationship Between Poverty And Child Maltreatment

Data shows that neglect—the persistent failure to meet a child’s needs—is the most common form of child abuse. In 2020, neglect accounted for the primary reason for 64% of children entering foster care.

Poverty puts children at a higher risk of maltreatment than several other factors. Poverty produces unrelenting and severe material hardships for families. Hardships restrict access to safe housing, healthcare, food, and education. These challenges hinder a parent’s ability to meet their child’s needs, but an inability to provide does not mean an unwillingness to provide.

How We Are Ending The Cycle Of Child Abuse In Young Families Experiencing Foster Care

Economic support, quality support services, and enhancing parenting skills are powerful interventions to allow families to heal and grow. Our life coaches ensure the financial needs of our teen parents in care are met while also providing individualized parenting and life skills lessons using risk assessments from the evidence-based Nurturing Parenting Program (NPP).

Life coaches assess teen parents on the NPP’s five specific parenting and child-rearing behaviors proven to contribute to the prevention of child abuse and neglect, which are:

1. Appropriate Expectations

Understands growth and development and that children are allowed to exhibit normal developmental behavior.

2. High Levels of Empathy

Understands and values children’s needs. Communicates with children. Recognizes feelings of children.

3. Values Alternatives to Corporal Punishment

Understands alternatives to physical force and values mutual parent-child relationships.

4. Appropriate Family Roles

Finds comfort, support, and companionship from peers. Children are allowed to express developmental needs.

5. Values Power-Independence

Places high value on children’s ability to problem solve and empowers them to make good choices. Encourages children to express views but expects cooperation.

With your financial help, Teen Parent Connection can continue to provide life-saving resources for our teen parents and their children.

Our teens and their babies thank you the most.
