At Creative Community Services (CCS), we believe every child deserves more than just a place to stay—they deserve a chance to heal, grow, and truly belong.

When it comes to foster care, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Some children need stability and time to reconnect with family. Others carry deep emotional wounds that require specialized support. That’s why it’s so important to understand the difference between traditional foster care and therapeutic foster care—because the kind of care we offer can change everything.

Traditional Foster Care: A Lifeline for Many

Traditional foster care plays a critical role in keeping children safe. When a child is removed from an unsafe home, they’re placed with a licensed foster parent who provides structure, meals, clothes, and care—often on short notice.

What does traditional foster care look like?

  • Short-term placements while families work toward reunification or permanent solutions

  • Safe, stable homes where basic needs are met

  • Standard licensing and training for foster parents

  • Ongoing check-ins from DFCS or a partner agency

For many children, traditional foster care offers stability during a difficult season. But for kids who’ve experienced repeated trauma or struggle with severe behavioral challenges, traditional care might not be enough.

Therapeutic Foster Care: For Kids Who Need More

Therapeutic foster care (TFC) is designed for youth with higher levels of need—those who have been through intense trauma, multiple failed placements, or mental health challenges that require deeper support.

At CCS, our therapeutic foster parents receive trauma-informed training and wraparound support to walk alongside these kids as they heal and grow.

What sets therapeutic foster care apart?

  • Specialized training for foster parents, with tools to manage trauma-based behaviors

  • Access to counseling, case management, and behavioral support

  • Small caseloads for staff so every family gets attention

  • Personalized care plans based on each child’s needs

  • Longer-term placements focused on stability and healing

These are kids who need more than safety—they need understanding, consistency, and a team that won’t give up on them.

So… what’s the difference?

Aspect Traditional Foster Care Therapeutic Foster Care
Length of Stay Often short-term Often long-term
Training for Parents Standard training Trauma-informed, specialized training
Support Basic check-ins Full team support + therapy
Child’s Needs Moderate High—trauma, mental health, or behavioral needs
Goal Safety + permanency Healing + stability

Why TFC Matters (And Why We Need More Therapeutic Foster Parents)

Kids in therapeutic care have often been through more than anyone should. They might’ve lived in 20+ homes. They might’ve been told they’re “too difficult.” But we don’t see them that way.

We see kids who’ve been hurt—and who need someone to believe they’re worth healing. That’s what therapeutic foster care offers. And it works.

Real-Life Story:

Marcus had been in and out of placements for years. His behavior was labeled “defiant,” but underneath it all was trauma. When he was placed in a CCS therapeutic foster home, his caregiver had the training, patience, and support to understand what was really going on. Today, Marcus is in school, making friends, and feeling safe in his own skin. That’s the power of the right placement with the right people.
